How to Install a Single-Phase Surge Arrester in accordance with National Electrical Code Article 280 (Surge Arresters)


IMPORTANT!  IMPROPER SPECIFICATION OR INSTALLATION OF A SUPPRESSION SYSTEM MAY SEVERELY RESTRICT THE CAPABILITIES OF  YOUR SYSTEM AND WILL ADVERSELY AFFECT ALL BENEFICIAL ASPECTS OF YOUR INSTALLATION.
Select your Configuration from the choices below:

Single Phase Configuration
(European)
  1. The goal is to install equipment at a point that allows the shortest possible wiring without shar p bends or kinks.  Preferably, the combination of the neutral wire and the longest of the powered conductors will be less than 12 inches (approximately 30cm).

  2. The ground wire does not need to be extremely short but no wires may be spliced or extended.

    Please see: remote configuration.

  3. Check all voltages with a true RMS measuring meter.  Do not rely on "wire counting" to determine what type of service is installed.  As final confirmation, transformers should be checked for nameplate configuration information.

Preferred Method:  Install equipment on line-side of main disconnect. 
Alternate Method:  If no main disconnect is present, or if it is inaccessible, install directly to busbars.  Busbars may have existing holes or can be easily tapped.
NOTE:
Because this panel is equipped with a main disconnecting breaker, the unit illustrated at the bottom qualifies as installation as a surge suppressor (NEC Article 285)
