See Note 2 Below | Long branch circuits more than 30 feet (9.1 meters) from a Category “B” environment or more than 30 feet (9.1 meters) from Category “C” lo cations. IMPORTANT! See Note 2 Below | Immediately adjacent on the LOAD side of the service disconnect breaker. They are generally characterized as having short branch circuits and feeder lines. This category includes the following: · Distribution Panels and devices · Bus and feeders · Heavy appliance outlets with short connections to service entrance | Located on the LINE side of the Service Disconnect. This category includes the following: · Outside and Service Entrances · Service drops from pole to building · Run between meter and panel · Overhead lines to detached buildings or outside equipment · Underground lines to equipment such as well pumps. |
Note 1: Outbuildings supplied from the main panel are considered “Category C” environments. Anything connected in this manner must be protected by a “MAINS INSTALLATION”, not a “BREAKER INSTALLATION”. Interior panels of outlying buildings are treated as "Category B" environments unless they service equipment connected outside the building.
Note 2: Equipment connected to the building’s electrical system from outside the facility can serve as a path for transient voltages. The panel supplying these loads should be protected using a “MAINS INSTALLATION” by going directly to the Bus Bar on the panel (on the LOAD side) instead of connecting to an existing main disconnecting breaker (on the LINE side).
