While the more "mature" manufacturers and business operators truly understand the benefits of a comprehensive preventive maintenance program, we find during our surveys that there are many that do not. This section is for these organizations.
Stedi-Power installations are fully compatible with Total Productive Maintenance. We know that many customers place a greater emphasis on saving energy, but the true benefit to our system is the reduction in maintenance costs and increase of productivity and quality through the reduction of repairs and downtime.
The most obvious reason for implementing a maintenance program is that it reduces costs. What many managers fail to consider is the value in cost-avoidance that these programs represent.
HSB (Hartford Steam Boiler) Insurance company is one of the foremost champions of maintenance systems. They have tremendous maintenance programs that have been produced as the result of gathering decades of information relating to losses.
This is what they have to say about the main reasons for implementing maintenance programs.
Financial Considerations
If your company's profit margin is 10%, every dollar saved in operating costs is worth more than TEN dollars in sales. The reason is simple. Avoided costs go directly to profit. In the examp le of a 10% profit margin, it takes TEN dollars in sales to produce ONE dollar in profit. Place an extra dollar into the "profit column" and you have done better than ten dollars in sales because this increased profit didn't require additional manpower, longer hours, or more raw materials.
Breakdown maintenance is not only disruptive to your operations, but surveys indicate breakdown repairs cost three times the cost of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program. Depending upon existing conditions, implementation of a balanced preventive maintenance program can reduce previous program operating costs by 20% to 40%, while significantly increasing “up-time” and availability of equipment.
A Study by the Factory Mutual Insurance Group shows that an average of 56% of all electrical fire losses were due to the LACK OF PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.
Improving your maintenance practices, without spending any money on new equipment, can cut your utility bills between 6 to 27 percent. (The Energy Forum Report1996 • Vol. 4 Issue 1)
Preventive maintenance is significantly less costly and disruptive than replacing or repairing major systems when they break down. (Building Owners and Managers Association International 1996).
