We don't need lightning protection because we don't HAVE a "lightning problem"...
We hear this fairly often enough to make us wonder if we focus so much on transient voltage surge suppression because it's our core business. Consider the following, though, and you might find reason for concern:
During the 5 year period 1992-1996, we paid out $1.7 billion in lightning-related claims. This was 8.7% of total claims and 3.8% of dollar losses. –St. Paul Ins. Co.
Each year we have about 307,000 claims from lightning, amounting to loss reimbursements of some $332 million. –State Farm Insurance Co.
Five percent of all insurance claims are lightning-related, amounting to over $1 billion per year. –Insurance Information Institute, NY
On annual average, we pay out about 3-4% of our claims as a result of lightning. -Factory Mutual Companies
Lightning accounted for 101,000 laptop and desktop computer losses amounting to $125,417,000 in damage in 1997. -Computer Security News
Costs of lightning-induced failures from garage-door openers, PC modem cards, commercial telephone switches and low voltage security systems? No one knows. –National Lightning Safety Institute research, 2001The following are representations of lightning frequency worldwide. While they are limited somewhat by the areas that can be covered by satellite, they are quite comprehensive. As always, we prefer to attribute sources. If we don't have the source information available, it will be noted in the description block. If you know who the source is, we would greatly appreciate being informed so they may receive proper credit.

It is a large file (1.7 megabytes). Animation Credit: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio |
